Amira Hashish from the Evening Standard visited Pennybridge in June 2016 and in her article about “How to plan a VIP country house weekend” described what she found at Pennybridge.
“Pennybridge House in Wadhurst, East Sussex comes highly recommended. This magnificent 9,000 square feet pile feels like a spa retreat. Developer Gabriella Atkinson is the brains behind the project which oozes luxury.
Her impeccable taste is reflected in each of the rooms which have their own distinctive style. As well as seven beautifully decorated bedrooms there are two kitchens and various living areas including a grand dining room, billiards room and gorgeous sitting area which backs onto the sprawling gardens.
The pool house has its own heated pool with diving board, gym, sauna and steam room. There is also an undercover Pavilion for dining which overlooks the state-of-the-art BBQ space. Did we mention there is a tennis court and croquet too?”
Max from Canada “I stayed at Pennybridge house in December 2015. I thought the place was amazing almost magical. All the rooms are very spacious with at least 10ft ceilings. Some of the bedrooms have great views of the countryside. There is lots to do like starting your day with a long walk through the forest and open fields then relax in the hot tub or sauna then a swim in the pool you will feel like a million dollars. Towns and pubs are close by for shopping or lunch and a beer. I have lots of great memories of this place and I would highly recommend it. May be you can find the magic in the place like I did.”

“We had an absolutely wonderful time at the house last weekend. We rented the house to celebrate my wife’s 40th Birthday with our close family and it was the perfect setting for this occasion. I’ll mention a few highlights which made Springfield House a really good choice for us:
We live in The Netherlands and proximity to Gatwick Airport and also our UK family in Sussex was really important. Also Wadhurst itself is very close by and has nice pubs and other things to do. We had fairly typical UK January weather but when the clouds cleared the view across the valley behind the house was stunning as the sun came up.
The size of the house and also the layout were perfect for our family (17 including children). We really liked the fact that there is space and privacy between the bedrooms. There are also lots of different reception rooms so it’s easy to spread out and find some privacy if people want to.
The swimming pool is very large for a private house and the kids simply loved it. The adults really enjoyed the hot tub on patio just outside too. It was great to have a covered bbq area to cook under.
The house is finished to an exceptional standard, with lots of really interesting features, pictures and antiques (the pool table, perfectly working Steinway piano etc.) We didn’t expect the house to feel so homely and welcoming, but it’s the kind of house that makes you feel very comfortable. Julie the housekeeper was also really welcoming, she showed us round the house, gave us her contact details and genuinely encouraged us to explore and enjoy the house.
Thank you so much for recommending Zara. She was delightful and the food was exceptional (to quote my brother in law “this is the best beef I’ve ever had”). It was great to have Zara and also Christian to serve drinks etc. Our family enjoyed chatting to Zara and it was great she had time to prepare such a wonderful meal and still be sociable too.
Overall we were delighted with the house as a venue for my Wife’s birthday and would wholeheartedly recommend this property to anybody looking for a stunning country home, with great leisure facilities and close to London. The only problem we had was convincing the children to leave at the end of the weekend!”
Natalie “We had the most moving and memorable weekend imaginable and all in large part thanks to the fabulous house. It was like living in the set of a House and Gardens ad – in a good way!! Whether it was breakfasting in the stunning Mark Wilkinson kitchen with the Emma Bridgewater service or having a civilised coffee in the Amdega conservatory with the Wedgewood!! The house inspired perfection!
We had a roaring fire going in the drawing-room all weekend where my mother “held court”, the boys holed up in the Billiard room, a bit of Schumann could be had in the library & the toddlers settled in front of Peppa Pig in the TV room. Despite the awful weather there were somersault competitions on the beanbags in the games mezzanine & hours of fun in the pool/sauna/jacuzzi.
Oliver from Salt and Slate was fantastic & his food absolutely delicious. He also captured the intended “mood” perfectly at each meal whether it was the Friday homely meal or the more formal Saturday dinner. Having a rear kitchen was also great – it meant Oliver could work his magic in peace in one room whilst we fed the toddlers in the other.
The cleaner was great too – coming in both mornings & giving the ground-floor a clean & clearing up the dining room table-cloth.
All in all a great success. Many many thanks to everyone.”
“It certainly will be a memory we will never forget, a very special weekend at Pennybridge and one which I am sure we would all love to do again. You have a lovely place there a great set up, and were so pleased we could share it. I wish you all the best for the future with your projects and am sure at some point we will speak again. There is going to be a few photographs of that weekend around our house for many years to come.”
